Code the Hoan: Bringing Light, Technology, and Creativity to Life

If you’ve ever watched the Hoan light up at night, you’ve seen a story unfold in color. Now, imagine being the one behind that story.

That’s the idea behind Code the Hoan, our hands-on STEM experience that transforms coding from something abstract into something you can build, see, and bring to life.

Turning Code Into Something You Can See

Code the Hoan invites participants to step into the role of creator.

In this interactive program, participants build their own miniature version of the Hoan Bridge, using real hardware components, LED lighting, and an ESP32 microcontroller. From there, they learn to code custom lighting patterns, watching their ideas instantly translate into light.

It’s not just about learning syntax or following steps. It’s about that moment when the lights turn on for the first time, and you get to watch something you built and coded yourself come to life.

Built by Milwaukee, for Milwaukee

Each kit is assembled with the help of local students from CODEMKE, creating a powerful, full-circle model of learning and opportunity. Participants get to step beyond their role as students to act as contributors, builders, and collaborators.

These bridges are built right here in Milwaukee. When students help create the tools for learning, it changes the way the next generation sees what’s possible for themselves and for their city.

A Platform for Creativity

At its core, Code the Hoan blends technology with creativity. Participants go beyond the basics of learning how to code. They design light shows, experiment with patterns, and express ideas through color and movement. Every finished bridge is different. Every design tells a story.

Some draw inspiration from holidays. Others from sports teams, personal milestones, or the real Hoan itself. There’s no single “right” outcome, just endless possibilities.

From the Real Bridge to Your Hands

The Hoan Bridge has become a symbol of connection in Milwaukee. We light up for causes, celebrations, and moments that matter.

Code the Hoan brings that same spirit into participants’ hands. By recreating the bridge in miniature form, the program creates a tangible link between the city and the individual. It takes something iconic and makes it personal.

Why It Matters

Code the Hoan is about more than teaching students how to code.

Our goal is to show what STEM can look like when it’s accessible, creative, and rooted in community. It’s about giving people, especially young learners, the chance to build confidence, explore new skills, and see themselves in spaces they may not have considered before.

And it’s about investing in the future of Milwaukee. Because when you combine creativity, technology, and community, you spark something bigger.

What We’re Building Together

Every participant, every kit, every line of code adds to something larger. We’re building curiosity, confidence, and the next generation of problem-solvers.

Just like the Hoan itself, it all starts with a little light.
