Light the Hoan: Governance Update

Dear Partners and Friends,

As we celebrate the incredible milestone of lighting both sides of Milwaukee’s iconic Hoan Bridge, I want to share an update about Light the Hoan’s leadership and path forward to ensure the longevity of the organization.

Following the completion of our founding vision, our Board of Directors evolved our governance structure, and created an Emeritus Board of Directors. This was established to recognize individuals whose creativity, leadership, and dedication have made a lasting impact on Light the Hoan’s organization.

LTH Founders, Ian Abston and Michael Hostad, imagined what could be possible for Milwaukee’s skyline and rallied others to bring it to light. Together, they combined creativity, community spirit, and determination to secure the support needed to make the dream of lighting the Hoan Bridge a reality.

With gratitude from LTH, Ian and Michael have transitioned from their board positions to the Emeritus group. While they are no longer involved in the operational aspect of the organization, this honorary recognition ensures their founding contributions will always remain part of our story.

With the bridge fully illuminated — our initial goal when LTH was founded — and supported by an independent board and a healthy balance sheet, we are now focused on expanding programs, deepening community partnerships, and ensuring our work continues to reflect the people and spirit of Milwaukee. Over the coming months, we’ll welcome new board members, continue refining our bylaws and governance, and strengthen a sustainable plan to ensure generations to come can enjoy the beauty of the bridge.

Leadership and management of the organization rest with our active Board of Directors and me, as Executive Director. I remain your exclusive point of contact for all Light the Hoan initiatives, partnerships, and opportunities.

Thank you for your continued support. Let’s keep lighting up and lifting our community together!

Erika Smith, Executive Director
