At night, Milwaukee tells its stories in light. You see it on the Hoan, glowing against the skyline, dressed for the moment. Green for a cause. Blue and gold for a celebration. Colors that make you pause, even if just for a second, and wonder what’s being honored. It’s become a familiar part of the city’s rhythm, a backdrop to everyday moments and major milestones alike.
From the outside, it can feel simple, just a beautifully lit bridge. But what’s happening here goes far beyond the lights themselves. What they represent is where the real story lives.
Shining a Light on the Stories that Matter

At its core, Light the Hoan exists to shine a light on the people, organizations, and causes that shape Milwaukee every single day. This city is full of meaningful work, with much of it happening without recognition. Light the Hoan gives those moments a platform. It brings those moments out of the shadows and into view. Every lighting is intentional, and every night the bridge lights up, it’s telling a story that deserves to be shared.
In many ways, the Hoan has become Milwaukee’s most visible storyteller. It amplifies the work of nonprofits that are supporting families, advancing health initiatives, and strengthening neighborhoods. It celebrates cultural moments that reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the city. It brings attention to causes that need awareness and action. And it holds space for moments of remembrance, giving the community a way to collectively pause and reflect.
These stories might not always make headlines, but they matter deeply to the people living them, and that’s exactly why they belong in the spotlight.
Connecting Milwaukee & Beyond
What starts on the bridge doesn’t stay there. For organizations, lighting the Hoan offers a level of visibility that can be difficult to achieve otherwise. A single lighting can spark conversations, increase awareness, and help connect people to resources or support.
For individuals and families, it can be something even more personal. Seeing the Hoan lit for a cause that reflects your experience, whether it’s something you’re celebrating, navigating, or remembering, creates a sense of recognition that’s hard to put into words. It’s a reminder that you’re not alone, and that your story is part of something bigger.
For the city as a whole, these moments create connection. Milwaukee is a collection of neighborhoods, perspectives, and experiences, and the Hoan has a unique ability to bring those together. When the bridge lights up, it gives people something to share, something to talk about, and something to rally around. It turns individual moments into collective ones. Whether you’re seeing it from your car, your home, or along the lakefront, it invites you to be part of something happening in real time.
Visibility plays a powerful role in that connection. The Hoan takes causes and celebrations that might otherwise live in unseen spaces, and places them front and center, where they can’t be overlooked. In doing so, it sends a clear message: this matters. These people matter. This work matters.
Uniting Art & Technology
More than reflecting Milwaukee, the Hoan invites the community to shape it.
Through programs like Code the Hoan and the Intern Challenge, students get hands-on experience with the same technology that powers the bridge, blending creativity with problem-solving. And through partnerships like Radio Milwaukee, the bridge becomes part of the city’s cultural rhythm, lighting up in sync with the music that defines it.
In October of 2020, we partnered with Radio Milwaukee to light up the Harbor in sync with what was playing on air, marking the first time we brought the bridge’s technology into the community. Then last summer, for the very first time, we lit up in sync with The Lumineers’ Summerfest set.
The Power of Community
Light the Hoan is made possible by a network of partners and supporters who believe in the value of this platform and the impact it can have. They understand that visibility is about creating opportunities for awareness, engagement, and connection. Their support helps ensure that the Hoan can continue to serve as a space where Milwaukee’s stories are shared in a meaningful and accessible way. Together, it becomes a collective effort, reflecting a shared commitment to the community.
At the end of the day, the Hoan is still a bridge. It connects one part of Milwaukee to another.
But, through Light the Hoan, it’s also become a bridge in a new sense. It’s a platform, a signal, and a reflection of the city itself. It unites the people who show up, the organizations doing the work, and the moments that define who we are.
While you may see lights, what’s really happening here is something much bigger. We’re shining a light on Milwaukee, exactly as it deserves.
